UU women advance in tourney

The Urbana University women’s basketball team beat visiting West Virginia Wesleyan, 81-69, Tuesday night in the opening round of the MEC tournament.

UU led, 19-12, at the end of the first quarter and 45-32 at the half.

The Blue Knights owned a 62-47 lead after three periods.

For UU (13-14), Megan Beachy had 18 points, Erin Morrow and Kennedy Boggs each had 14, Danie Shafer had 13 and Jazmyn Haley added 11 and 19 rebounds.

Allie Browne paced WVWU (7-20) with 20 points.

The sixth-seeded Blue Knights advance to the second round where a rematch against in-state rival and third-seeded Notre Dame College awaits. UU defeated NDC by 15 points last Saturday. Thursday’s tipoff is set for 2:15 p.m. at the Charleston Civic Center in Charleston, W. Va.

UU men fall

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Charleston defeated Urbana University, 76-66, in the MEC men’s basketball tournament on Tuesday.

The home team led, 31-26, at the half.

For the Blue Knights (2-26), Carlas Jackson had a game-high 31 points and Dmitri Abner added 17. Mike Newton had 8 rebounds and 3 assists.
