PIQUA – Fort Loramie flexed its collective muscles and ran over Mechanicsburg, 75-50, in the Division IV boys sectional basketball on Friday.

The Redskins opened with a flurry of forced turnovers and three-pointers, charging out to a 21-8 lead after one quarter and pressing the margin to 49-23 at the half. Mack Cushman was able to hit a running three-pointer at the buzzer before intermission for Mechanicsburg.

“(Fort Loramie) shot the ball very well,” MHS Coach Matt Siegel said. “Anytime they shoot 68 percent or whatever it was from the three, it’s going to be tough to win that one.”

Coming out of the break, Fort Loramie called off the dogs a bit, dropping into a half-court defense and easing off the accelerator at the offensive end, as well.

Still, the slowed pace didn’t seem to dampen the Redskins’ efficiency, as they led 70-38 going into the fourth quarter.

Mechanicsburg was able to close the gap a bit against the Redskins’ reserves, but never threatened the outcome.

“At times we executed offensively,” Siegel said. “We never quite clicked like we would have hoped. In spurts during the year and in spurts during the game, we would see it, but we could never sustain it.”

Cushman scored 16 points and Bobby Welch had 12 for Mechanicsburg. Dillon Braun scored 26 for Fort Loramie, which hit 13 three-pointers in the game.

“They’re a very well-coached team,” Siegel said of Fort Loramie. “Basketball there is very important. They work very hard at it and I’m sure those kids get a lot of shots up in the offseason. Braun’s going to be a very good player. He’s going to be very solid.”
