CHARLESTON, W. Va. – Senior Kennedy Boggs scored a season-high 23 points to lead the UU women past Charleston Saturday by a final score of 58-55 inside the Civic Center.
With the win, UU (8-12, 7-9) snapped a six-game losing streak and completed the regular-season sweep over the Golden Eagles. The Blue Knights also took over sole possession of seventh place in the Mountain East Conference. The top eight teams qualify for the MEC Tournament.
In the later game on Saturday, the UU men fell, 88-73.
Boggs recorded 16 points in the first half, including eight straight after UC tied the game at 15-15 in the second quarter. She ended up shooting 50 percent from the floor and finished with six boards and three assists.
Freshman Danie Shafer put up 18 points on 4-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc, while sophomores Stefanie Davis and Jazmyn Haley contributed on the glass with eight and 11 rebounds, respectively.
Both teams struggled shooting the rock in a defensive battle. UU hit 30 percent overall and 6 of 27 from three-point range, while UC shot at a 33-percent clip and made 4 of 21 attempts beyond the arc.
Right off the bat, UU faced a 9-2 deficit after the opening six minutes of action. But, Shafer and Boggs would end up finding their strokes to fashion an impressive 13-2 run to close out the quarter. Shafer hit three treys and Boggs totaled four points, which guided the Blue Knights to a 15-13 advantage.
The Blue Knights, who led 29-21 at halftime, limited the Golden Eagles to just eight points in the second frame, as Boggs and Shafer combined for all but two points for UU in the first half.
UU grabbed its largest lead of the game shortly after the break, as Davis drilled a 3-pointer to put UU ahead 32-21. However, the home team put together a 10-2 run which forced UU head coach Haley Ducey to call timeout at the 6:15 mark in the third.
Out of the timeout, UC got within a point but Shafer put a stop to the run with her fourth three of the game, giving UU a 37-33 lead. The teams traded blows the rest of the quarter and UU held on to a 45-44 advantage at the end of third quarter.
Chyress Lockhart’s jumper at the 3:45 mark gave UC a 55-53 edge, but UU clamped down after that and held the Golden Eagles scoreless the rest of the way.
UU returns to the Grimes Center this week with league games against Fairmont State (Thursday) and Shepherd (Saturday).
