UVa-Wise knocks off Blue Knight women, 72-52

WISE, Va. – The Urbana University women’s basketball team fell, 72-52, to UVa-Wise in Saturday’s conference opener inside the Prior Center.

UU dropped to 0-2 (0-1 MEC) on the season following the loss while Wise improved to 2-2, 1-0.

Junior Sylvia Hudson posted a double-double to lead the Blue Knights with 10 points, 10 rebounds. three steals, two blocks and two assists. Freshman Nikki Current also reached double figures with 10 points and five boards. Senior Megan Beachy chipped in with seven points.

The Blue Knights never led in the contest and couldn’t buy a bucket in the first quarter, starting 1 of 16 (6.3 %) from the floor. UU entered halftime down 30-17 with only three made field goals.

Overall, Wise shot 41.3 percent while limiting the visiting UU squad to a season-low mark of 26.8 percent. The Cavs held a 34-18 edge on points in the paint and 45-39 margin on rebounds. The hosts also forced 23 Blue Knight turnovers and turned the ball over 18 times.

The Blue Knights outscored the Cavs 17-15 in the fourth quarter but it was too little, too late.

Wise point guard Janice Ladson led all scorers with 14 points and had five steals while forward Cynita Webb produced a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards.

UU has now dropped five out of six games played at the Prior Center during the all-time series between the two teams.

UU travels to Concord (3-1, 1-0 MEC) for a rare 1 p.m. tipoff today. The Mountain Lions are coming off an 88-81 home win over Notre Dame College.
