WL-S has 4 starters returning

WEST LIBERTY – The WL-S football team went 6-4 in the regular season a year ago but still landed a playoff berth.

Unfortunately, the Tigers’ playoff opponent turned out to be mighty Marion Local, so WL-S was one and done in the postseason.

This year, the Tigers find themselves with only four returning starters: seniors Trevor Burden (OL/DL), Kevin McNutt (OL/DL), Levi Moell (WR/DB) and Braden Miller (RB/LB).

“The competition has been good in camp, so that’s very encouraging,” said fifth-year WL-S Coach Dan McGill. “Our goal is just to improve every day and gain experience. We want the kids to soak up the coaching and really absorb what we’re trying to do to get better.”

Others vying for varsity playing time include seniors Raj Roland (OL/DL), Zech Wilcox (DL/FB), Garrett Predmore (WR/DB) and Thomas Allen (WR/DB); juniors Thad Lawrence (OL/DL), Dominic Blair (OL/DL), Tyler Smith (TE/LB), Major Stratton (LB), Eddie Colota (linebacker), Cam Miley (WR/DB) and Konnor Smith (WR) and sophomores Zane Reed (LB), Trenton Douthwaite (DB) and Ethan Lawson (WR/DB).

The starting quarterback will be sophomore Trevor Woodruff.

“Trevor has good poise and really understands the game,” said McGill. “He’s an accurate passer, and he’s been a good leader so far.”

McGill said it’s difficult to predict the OHC race since the league has added so many teams this season.

“Now, with two divisions and all these new teams, it’s hard to speculate. It will probably be wide open,” he said.

WL-S opens the season Friday night by hosting Graham in non-league action.
