UU’s Howell named All-MEC honorable mention

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The Urbana University men’s golf team placed seventh at the Mountain East Conference Spring Invitational on Tuesday, led by junior Rodney Howell Jr. of Pickerington who earned All-MEC Honorable Mention status following the two-day event at the Edgewood Country Club.

UU, which was picked ninth in preseason voting, finished seventh with a consistent performance that saw the Blue Knights post a team score of 324 in both rounds for an overall score of 648 (+80).

Howell ended up tied for 17th on the leaderboard with three others at 14-over par 156. He shot a team-low 77 in the opening round and came back with a 79 on the final 18.

Austin Wells finished one stroke behind Howell at 15-over par 157, which also tied him with three other golfers for 21st on the leaderboard. The senior from New Richmond, Ohio, recorded a first round score of 79 and took off a stroke on Day 2 with a 78.

Rounding out the UU lineup were Kyle Glaser (166) in 39th, Cody Lyons (169) in 45th and T.J. Fink (185) in 55th.

West Liberty captured the team title by 14 strokes with an overall score of 591 (+23). The Hilltoppers’ Mathew Iceton earned low-medalist by finishing at even-par 142 after carding a 73 and 69.

UU will close out the spring season on April 18-19 at the Ohio Valley Invitational.
