Blue Knights to host Concord

The Mountain East Conference has three men’s basketball teams ranked in the top 25 in the country in the most recent NABC polls. Fairmont State has moved back to No. 2 in the national polls, West Liberty fell to seventh and Wheeling Jesuit dropped to No. 23.

Six teams have secured a spot in Charleston for the MEC Tournament: Fairmont State, West Liberty, Wheeling Jesuit, Shepherd, Notre Dame and West Virginia Wesleyan. The top 10 teams qualify for the tournament with the top six earning first-round byes.

Ranked teams lost to unranked teams last week for the first time this season as Wheeling Jesuit lost at UVa-Wise and West Liberty was defeated at Concord.

Four MEC players have at least 11 double-doubles this year, led by Charleston’s Justin Coleman who has 18.

Sixteen different players have scored 30-plus points in a game this season with Glenville State’s Brett Morris and Urbana University’s Jahmere Howze joining the club last week.

The MEC continues to be the highest scoring league in the nation averaging 83 points per game.

Urbana U. aims to match its highest win total as a D-II program when the Blue Knights host Concord today at 7:30 p.m. UU defeated CU for the first time in program history on a DeQuan Abrom game-winner on Jan. 10

The Blue Knights will honor the UU 1991-92 NAIA Sweet 16 team Saturday when they take on UVa-Wise … the previous four matchups between UU and UVa-Wise were decided by an average of five points.

The UU women’s basketball team will host Concord today at 5:30 p.m.

UU is a combined 5-1 at home against this week’s opponents Concord and UVa-Wise.

Sylvia Hudson has nine double-doubles on the year. She ranks fourth in the nation and leads the MEC in field-goal percentage (60.7).

UU boasts the highest free-throw percentage in the MEC (77.1), which ranks 16th in the nation.
