CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The Urbana University women’s basketball team suffered a 73-63 loss at Charleston Wednesday night in UU’s first appearance in the H. Bernard Wehlre Sr. Athletic Arena.

The Blue Knights drop to 5-13 (3-12 MEC) on the season while the Golden Eagles improve to 8-13 (7-8 MEC) on the year.

UU’s Sylvia Hudson led all scorers with 24 points and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds to register her sixth double-double. Hudson, who leads the MEC in shooting percentage, finished 12 of 14 from the floor.

Jennifer Alflen went 4 of 8 from beyond the arc for 12 points, while Megan Beachy (11 points) and Stefanie Davis (10 points) contributed to the scoring column.

The Golden Eagles were paced by Anna Hayton, who poured in 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting.

UU ended up outshooting UC 46 percent to 40 percent, and held a plus-seven margin on the glass (38-31). However, a season-high 26 turnovers proved costly for the Knights as the hosts outscored UU 31-10 on points off turnovers.

Both teams struggled to score early on as Charleston went up 23-19 at halftime.

Then, UU fought back into the contest as a Hudson layup tied the score at 32-32 midway through the third quarter.

Charleston would answer though, countering with an 11-3 run to go ahead 43-35 to force a UU timeout with 1:30 left in the third. UU never recovered and trailed by double digits the entire fourth quarter.

The Blue Knights return to their home court on Saturday when they host West Virginia State for a 2 p.m. tipoff inside the Grimes Center.

In Wednesday night’s late game, Charleston beat Urbana University, 79-65, in men’s basketball.
