Urbana and Indian Lake went back and forth Friday night, with the visiting Lakers coming out on top, 63-49.

Urbana looked sharp offensively early, with Kalen Howell rattling off three straight buckets and tallying nine points in the first quarter. But the defense was lacking, especially inside, where IL’s Colin Coburn had his way to the bucket over and over.

“The scouting report says Coburn drives to his right. And he caught the ball his first six times and drove right to his right and made a layup,” UHS Coach Jeremy Dixon said. “I’m not sure what else we can do. They were definitely the aggressor. They deserve every one of those fouls they got. We’re not going to get foul calls when they’re the aggressor.”

Coburn finished with 22 points for the Lakers (7-6), leading all scorers for the game.

Urbana went to the half trailing 32-25, with Dixon visibly upset.

The Hillclimbers (8-6) came out more intense and focused in the third quarter, forcing turnovers and getting buckets. The score was actually tied going into the fourth quarter, but Indian Lake went on a 14-point streak to open the frame before Urbana was able to answer.

“We stunk in the first quarter, so we had to spend so much energy to come back in the third quarter, we probably didn’t have anything left,” Dixon said. “They just wanted to win more than we did. I can handle losing. I can’t handle that.”

Howell led the Hillclimbers with 17 points with Levi Boettcher scoring 11.

Indian Lake also won the jayvee game, 42-38. For Urbana, Grant Hower had 10 points and Isaiah Fonseca had 9.

Urbana gets a week off before hosting Kenton Ridge next Friday, Jan. 27.
