Cavaliers upend Cardinals

NORTH LEWISBURG – Lehman Catholic jumped all over Triad from the opening tip and ran the Cardinals off the floor early en route to a 65-52 victory on Tuesday.

The Cavaliers led 24-6 after just one quarter, with Triad turning the ball over and Lehman making the Cardinals pay in transition. Even off missed shots, the visitors pushed the ball and came away with an alarming offensive output.

“It was a combination of things. Their defense at first – they played a 2-3 and they really extended it and took some things away,” Triad Coach Jason Malone said. “It was just a terrible start. We did the same thing last Saturday … just not taking care of the things we can control.”

Things got slightly better in the second quarter, with Triad matching Lehman with a few long-range shots by Hadley LeVan and some nifty work in the lane by Alec Ober.

“Once (LeVan) gets on a run a little bit, he gives some confidence to everybody else. He can make up for a lot of bad things on offense,” Malone said.

Still, the margin was unchanged, as Triad went into the locker room down 42-24.

The Cardinals (4-7) came out swinging in the second half, forcing a few turnovers of their own and clawing back to as close as seven points.

But in the end, Lehman just had too much and Triad ran out of time and chances, succumbing to the early deficit.

“Just too big of a hole. But our guys fought. They scratched and clawed their way back into it. I’ve been saying it over and over – we’ve got a couple of young guys – and I’m not trying to make excuses, but we all need to put together 32 minutes,” Malone said. “And it’s either at the front end or the back end, but I don’t think we’ve been doing that.”

Lehman Catholic won the jayvee game, 34-20. Kobe Endicott had 9 points and Jordan Fyffe had 8 for Triad.

Lehman won the 9th grade game, 48-31. Payton Oyer had 11 points for the Cardinals.
