Mays, YSU advance to FCS semifinals

Urbana High School graduate Nathan Mays has had quite a season as a backup quarterback at Youngstown State.

On Oct. 15, he was pressed into duty because of injuries to the first- and second-string QBs, and he led YSU to a victory over then 21st-ranked Northern Iowa.

Youngstown State (11-3), with Mays now backing up starting quarterback Hunter Wells, has advanced to the FCS national semifinals at Eastern Washington on Saturday.

YSU is coached by former Nebraska Coach Bo Pelini, and former Ohio State Coach Jim Tressel is the university’s president.

Former Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig was recently elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, along with former Kansas City Royals and Atlanta Braves General Manager John Schuerholz.

During Selig’s 22-year reign as commissioner, MLB profits soared, although not everything was rosy in the sport.

The World Series was cancelled in 1994 due to a labor dispute, and steroid use became rampant in the late 1990s.

Schuerholz built the Royals of the 1980s and the Braves of the 1990s into big winners.

Former New York Yankees’ owner, the late George Steinbrenner, was also on the ballot but didn’t earn enough votes to be elected.

Selig and Schuerholz were both good choices, but it’s a shame that former Cincinnati Reds’ GM Bob Howsam still hasn’t been elected to the Hall despite building one of the greatest teams of all time – the Big Red Machine.

Trivia Time – Dan Reeves and Jeff Fisher each hold the record for most losses as a head coach in NFL history with 165.

This week’s question – Before Bud Selig, who was the last living ex-Baseball Commissioner to be elected to the Hall of Fame?
