OSU fans have forgiven Tressel

When Jim Tressel was forced out as Ohio State football coach back in May of 2011, I wondered how long it would take for him to be accepted by Buckeye fans again.

After all, he had lied to OSU administrators, falsely claiming he didn’t know that some of his players had traded championship rings, jerseys and other football-related items for tattoos, and Ohio State had to vacate all of its wins in the 2010 season due to the NCAA rules violations.

Apparently, Buckeye fans – and college football fans, in general – are a forgiving bunch, since Tressel has recently been elected to both the College Football Hall of Fame and the Ohio State University Sports Hall of Fame.

Tressel is still considered OSU royalty because he won a national title in 2002, led the Buckeyes to two other BCS championship games, won six Big Ten titles and had an 8-1 record against arch-rival Michigan.

When I asked Tressel about his recent election to the OSU Sports Hall of Fame, he said: “I’m so humbled, and so proud of those teams.”

Tressel is currently the president of Youngstown State University.
