NORTH LEWISBURG – After jumping out to an 8-0 lead early in the first quarter, Triad had to fight back Riverside for the remaining 30 minutes, eventually downing the Pirates, 43-35, in non-league girls basketball action Monday.

The Pirates pulled to within two points, 16-14, by the first break and narrowed the deficit to one at the half, 24-23, but could never make it over the hump.

The Cardinals (2-5 overall) kept their composure and hit shots down the stretch.

Jenna Ober continued to shine for Triad, as she scored 17 points, eight of which came in the fourth quarter, hitting all four of her foul shots down the stretch. Tori Thomas chipped in with nine points, but it was the defense that Malone singled out after the win. The Cardinals made the Pirates cough up the ball 24 times on the night.

“We really did better defensively,” Triad Coach Jason Malone said. “That’s something that’s really been bugging us. But we got stops when we needed to and had people in the right positions to make plays.”

The Cardinals also took advantage at the charity stripe, connecting on 11 of 13 attempts from the line.

Triad also won the jayvee game, 36-34. Shelby Sheets had 13 points for Triad.

Triad’s Alea Ferguson goes up for two points in the Cardinals’ 43-35 win over visiting Riverside in non-league action Monday night.
