Mechanicsburg and West Liberty-Salem will each represent Champaign County in the Division VI, Region 24 football playoffs later this week.

Mechanicsburg (10-0), the third seed, will host sixth-seeded Miami East (7-3) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

“We knew we would be the three seed from looking at the numbers all year. That’s exactly what we expected,” M’burg Coach Kurt Forrest said. “We like the situation we’re in.”

The Indians are the only perfect team in the region, but a soft Ohio Heritage Conference schedule hurt them in the polls.

“There’s no more computer rankings,” Forrest said. “You have to show it on the field. You just have to go win.”

Eighth-seeded West Liberty-Salem (6-4) travels to Maria Stein to take on top-seeded Marion Local (9-1) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The Tigers squeaked into the final playoff spot with a win against Springfield Catholic Central in the last week of the regular season.

“Making the playoffs is a goal the kids have every year and it’s a nice accomplishment,” said WL-S Coach Dan McGill, whose team started the season 2-4. “We weren’t just playing out a losing hand (those last four weeks). We worked our tails off.”

Pre-sale playoff tickets will be available at each school later this week.
