Urbana University Director of Athletics Larry Cox recently announced the hiring of Kira Zeiter to lead the Blue Knight softball program as its next head coach. Zeiter, a native of Tucson, Ariz., is the fourth head softball coach over the past 10 years at UU.

“I am very pleased and excited to have Kira join our staff,” Cox said. “Her experience as a player and head coach at the NCAA Division II level made her the perfect candidate for our position. She has a passion for college athletics and developing student-athletes, which will pay immediate dividends in recruiting new students for the Blue Knight softball program.”

Most recently, Zeiter compiled a 105-138 record over the past five seasons at Fort Lewis College, a Division II school located in Durango, Colorado. She set a program record for single-season wins with 30 in 2012, while leading the Skyhawks to an NCAA regional berth. Zeiter has the best winning percentage of any coach in FLC softball history at .432.

“I’m honored to be named the next head coach of the Urbana University softball program,” Zeiter said. “I want to thank Larry Cox for giving me this incredible opportunity. During this process, Urbana felt like a close-family environment, which I loved, and I felt welcomed right away on campus. I’m looking forward to working with the team, and becoming part of Urbana University athletics.”

Before taking over the Skyhawks, Zeiter spent three seasons as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Adams State College. There, she was responsible for off-campus recruiting, scouting opponents, summer camps and day-to-day operations for the Grizzlies. During her time as an assistant coach, Adams State posted a 76-59 overall record.

Zeiter also enjoyed a very successful playing career as a corner infielder and outfielder for Adams State. She was a two-time ESPN: The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-American, a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District VII selection and a three-time All-RMAC and Academic All-RMAC selection.

Zeiter finished her playing career holding down the top 10 spots in 11 different statistical categories in ASC’s NCAA Division II era (1993-present) record book. Following her senior year, she led the Grizzlies in career games played (198) and career games started, and ranked fourth in career home runs (20), third in career RBIs (98), second in career doubles (36) and second in career walks (86).

Zeiter received both her bachelor’s degree in business administration, and master’s degree in human performance and physical education from Adams State.
