Indians finish 12th at state

COLUMBUS – Mechanicsburg on Saturday improved by 20 strokes over its Friday score – more than any other team – but still finished in last place at the Division III state boys golf tournament at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course in Columbus.

The Indians fired a 374 on Saturday for a two-day score of 768. Southeastern, which finished a spot ahead of M’burg in 11th, had a 756 total. Lancaster’s Fisher Catholic won the event with a 658.

Caleb Westfall led the Indians with rounds of 82 and 83 for a two-day total of 165 and a tie for 18th place.

Mack Cushman (104-93/197, T-58th), Corey Bogan (98-102/200, 64th), Cody Minor (111-96/207, 68th) and Jack Shoemaker (110-116/226, 72nd) all posted rounds in the 72-man field.

M’burg football blasted Jets

SPRINGFIELD – For Mechanicsburg in its 61-7 win over Northeastern last Friday night, Phil Cook had 122 yards on 13 carries with 3 touchdowns and Kaleb Romero had 93 yards rushing on 10 carries with a pair of touchdowns. Romero also went 7-of-7 passing for 149 yards and a touchdown.

Dustin Knapp, Gavin Erwin and Wade Smiddy each scored on the ground.

Smiddy led the receiving corps with 4 catches for 74 yards. Bobby Welch caught 2 balls for 61 yards and a score.

WL-S runners win OHC title

The West Liberty-Salem girls cross country team won the Ohio Heritage Conference title at Cedarville on Saturday. The win was WL-S’s 22nd conference title.

Sophomore Reghan Bieleski won the race in 20:01 to earn her second MVP honors. Caylee Karg (5th, 20:50) and Jenna Magnuson (6th, 21:19) were also named to the conference’s First Team.

Lauren Fowler (8th, 22:06), Sarah Painter (12th, 22:17), Leah Cole (13th, 22:19), Anna Louden (16th, 22:34), Taylor Henault (17th, 22:35), Madison Woodruff (19th, 22:51) and Katie Hartsel (24th, 23:37) also ran for the Tigers.

Fowler, Painter and Cole earned Second Team all-conference honors. Louden, Henault and Woodruff received honorable mention.

The WL-S boys team also won the conference title – its 7th consecutive and the program’s 27th overall.

Senior Joey Adams (1st, 16:45) won his third MVP award. Michael Conley (2nd, 17:07), Ross Kelley (5th, 17:25) and Nick Williams (6th, 17:29) all earned First Team honors.

Jordan Lewis (9th, 18:07), Andrew Landis (11th, 18:10) and Isaac Smith (12th, 18:18) earned Second Team awards.

Bryan Woods (17th, 18:37), Charlie Williams (18th, 18:52), Konner Smith (20th, 19:01) and James Loffing (21st, 19:06) were named to the honorable mention list.

Zavier Esch (25th, 19:32), Kannon Stillings (30th, 20:26) and Tyler Louden (38th, 21:45) also ran.

“Words can’t describe how proud I am of these amazing young men,” WL-S Coach Mike Louden said. “I love the fact that the guys have pushed each other this entire season.”

Triad volleyball loses

Northwestern defeated Triad, 25-17, 25-16, 25-20, in Division III sectional volleyball on Saturday.

M’burg volleyball wins

Mechanicsburg beat Ansonia, 25-8, 25-21, 25-16, in Division IV sectional volleyball on Saturday.

Junior high cross country

The WL-S junior high cross country runners won both the boys and girls races at the OHC championships.

Noah Smith (1st, 11:26), Gavin Harrison (5th, 12:23) and Cade Clerico (7th, 12:45) earned all-conference honors for the boys. Hayden Kennedy (8th, 12:50), Ian Maurice (13th, 14:18) and Cody Matthews-Moore (22nd, 17:14) also ran.

Katelyn Stapleton (1st, 12:01), Grace Adams (2nd, 12:41), Madison Bahan (3rd, 12:44), Payton Umphries (5th, 13:25), Lydie Moell (6th, 14:08) and Savannah Weaver (7th, 14:25) earned all-conference honors for the girls. Aaliyah Speert (9th, 14:39), Tory Pawelko (12th, 15:25), Sailor Levan (16th, 16:37), Mikaela Holdridge (17th, 16:44), Lili Davis (19th, 17:09) and Jessie Boy (23rd, 20:14) also ran.

Junior high volleyball

The WL-S 8th grade volleyball team lost in the OHC championship to South Vienna, 25-21, 25-12. Alex Burton had 4 kills and 3 serve receptions, Kennah Erwin had 3 aces and Ryleigh Johns recorded 3 assists for the Tigers
