Baseball Hall of Famer Yogi Berra was definitely one of a kind.

I remember standing around the batting cage at Cincinnati’s Riverfront Stadium back in the 1980s when Berra was a coach with the Houston Astros and listening to him tell stories about his playing days with the New York Yankees.

As a catcher for the Yankees, Berra was an 18-time All-Star and 10-time World Series champion.

For being a true baseball legend, he was always very down to earth.

Champaign County native Harvey Haddix told me that he really enjoyed coaching with the New York Mets in 1966-67 – not because he liked the big city – but because he got to be around Berra, who was also a coach on manager Wes Westrum’s staff.

A lot of funny quotes are attributed to Berra, and even though he didn’t really say most of them, he enjoyed the notoriety that came with them.

Berra died last week at the age of 90, and there will never be another person quite like him.

The Cleveland Browns set a new low in team history last Sunday by taking the field against the visiting Raiders in garish brown jerseys with orange numbers to go along with brown pants.

The players looked like chunks of mud running up and down the field.

At least Nike will be able to sell more over-priced apparel to naive fans.
