Burchett plays in Nationals

MECHANICSBURG — Daniel Burchett recently attended the Little League Nationals tournament in Florida, where he competed for the second consecutive year with the Columbus Cobras – a travel team based out of Columbus.

“It was actually pretty cool down there. The Atlanta Braves – that’s where they practice. So I got to see them practice,” Burchett said.

This is Burchett’s third year with the Cobras.

“I started out in 10-u doing travel ball, but I’ve been playing since way before that,” he said.

The squad went 5-0 to win the USSSA Cincinnati Dual Super NIT tournament and qualify for the Nationals – the USSSA Elite 32 World Series in Orlando.

This year, the Cobras won just one game at the tournament, but that didn’t stop Burchett and his family from having a lot of fun. They have more family in the Sunshine State, so they turn the tournament trip into a vacation.

Living in Mechanicsburg since he was 7, Burchett also enjoys basketball and fishing. He plays the trombone, as well.

But baseball is his first love.

“It’s awesome. This year we’re going to Omaha, Nebraska,” he said.

Burchett plays second base and outfield for the Cobras, but he prefers second. His favorite professional is Reds’ second baseman Brandon Phillips.

Burchett said he’d also like to try out at first base and catcher sometime.

“I used to catch,” he grinned.

Burchett has played travel baseball in Kentucky, Indiana, Alabama and North Carolina, in addition to Ohio and Florida.
