Good choices for the Ring of Honor

0

Bob Brenning, Ray DeCola and Mike Simpson will be inducted into the George Scott Ring of Honor on Friday, Aug. 28 prior to the London at Urbana football game, and all three are very worthy recipients of this honor.

All three were also active at UHS while I was in high school.

DeCola was the head football and tennis coach, Brenning was the football team’s defensive coordinator and the head coach in baseball and Simpson was the athletic trainer.

DeCola had outstanding football teams during my tenure at UHS, and his 1981 squad may still be the best team the school ever fielded.

Brenning’s baseball team won the Class AA state title my senior year in 1982, and Simpson spent countless hours working with UHS athletes to make sure they were healthy and ready to compete.

Brenning, DeCola and Simpson are the first three inductees into the George Scott Ring of Honor, and there are dozens of other UHS athletes and contributors also worthy of induction.

Just a few who come to mind include Roger Wallace, Greg Rogan and Jeff Rogan in football, Van Evans and Jannon Roland in basketball, Doug Rutan in football and baseball … and the list goes on and on.

Anyone can nominate an athlete, coach or contributor for the Ring of Honor. Nomination forms can be found on the Urbana Athletic Department website (www.urbana.k12.oh.us). A committee reviews the applicants and votes on the candidates.
