CHARLESTON, W. Va. – A season-high 12 goals led Urbana University past Charleston in Sunday’s MEC lacrosse matchup.

The Blue Knights won by a final score of 12-8, which equaled the same number of UU goals scored in the previous four contests combined.

UU (1-10, 1-3) trailed by two scores on four different occasions in the first half, but battled back to claim a 7-5 advantage at halftime.

After going down 2-0 at the start, sophomore Taylor Henderson put UU on the board with the first of her career-high six goals on the day. Five of her goals helped spur the first-half comeback.

Melina Hilty found the back of the net with 14:53 left in the first half, and then Henderson trimmed the deficit back to one at 4-3 with 12 minutes to go until the break.

Henderson kept the momentum rolling toward the end of the stanza with back-to-back strikes to even the score at 5-5. Then, freshman Nicole Camponeschi gave UU its first lead of the game with 2:14 until halftime. Henderson tacked on another goal in the final minute to give the Blue and Grey the halftime lead.

UU’s defense was the story of the second half.

After giving up a pair of UC goals that tied the score again at 7-7, the Blue Knights responded with four unanswered in the second stanza.

UU goalkeeper Paige Waqa led the defense with 15 saves against 32 shots. The Blue Knights tallied 22 ground balls and edged the Golden Eagles 12-10 on draw controls.

Chanelle Bondurant scored in her 24th goal to put UU up for good with 21 minutes remaining in regulation. The senior has found the back of the net in six straight games.

Camponeschi recorded two more goals and Henderson added her final strike later on. With 2:56 left, senior Megan Verhoff scored the first goal of her career and UU closed out its first win of the season.

UU returns home this Sunday where it will play host to Shepherd.
