Manning was wise to announce his retirement

Future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning definitely made the right decision when he announced his retirement last week.

For one thing, he’s been accused of using the banned substance human growth hormone (HGH), although he vehemently denies it.

Interestingly enough, though, he has not yet sued the author of the HGH report for defamation.

The NFL can now put that potentially-embarrassing investigation on the far back burner since Manning won’t be playing anymore.

And then there’s the alleged sexual assault that took place when Manning was at the University of Tennessee.

The alleged victim in the case had been paid off not to press charges long ago, but Manning foolishly brought the incident up again in a recent book, which led to a lawsuit filed by the victim.

And then there’s the matter of his on-field performance, which was terrible by anyone’s standards last season – 9 TD passes, 17 interceptions and a quarterback rating of 67.9.

The previous season, his QB rating was 101.5.

He did somehow lead the Broncos to a Super Bowl title last month, although he played poorly in that game, too.

Manning’s career path was starting to look like that of another legendary Hall of Famer and former Colts’ quarterback, Johnny Unitas.

An over-the-hill Unitas feebly helped lead the Colts to a win over the Cowboys in Super Bowl V, and no can forget how sad it was to see Johnny U. flailing away for the San Diego Chargers in 1973 with a QB rating of 40.

Trivia Time – UU men’s basketball coach Rob Summers began his collegiate playing career at Penn State.

This week’s question – Where did Johnny Unitas play college football?
