BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. – Urbana University’s Brent West has been selected as the Mountain East Conference Baseball Player of the Week and teammate Jackson Everman has been tabbed Pitcher of the Week, as announced Monday by the league office.

West, a junior infielder from Mechanicsville, Virginia, led UU at the plate in a four-game series against Kentucky State last weekend, hitting .429 (6-for-14) with a team-high five RBI, two doubles and six runs scored. He also reached base three more times via walks and a hit-by-pitch to post a .529 on-base percentage.

In Game 2 of the series, West tied his career-high mark with three hits and knocked in a pair, including an RBI double to plate the first run in UU’s 11-1 victory. He continued his offensive prowess with back-to-back RBI hits in Game 3 to help lift UU to a 6-3 win.

Everman, a junior hurler from Hilliard, Ohio, had a career outing and picked up his first win of the season in the Game 2 triumph over KSU. The right hander fanned a career-high nine batters and surrendered just three hits and one walk, and got stronger as the game wore on by retiring nine straight through the fourth, fifth and sixth frames. KSU scored its only run off Everman in the fourth, but UU had already established a 4-0 lead.

UU will open conference play when it returns to the diamond this weekend at West Virginia State and Charleston.

Games washed out

Due to a heavy volume of rain the past few days, UU’s home softball doubleheader scheduled for Tuesday against Ashland has been washed out. Head coach Kira Zeiter announced that a make-up date has not been determined.

The Blue Knights are slated to host Wheeling Jesuit for a pair of league games on Wednesday.
