A head-on collision between two passenger vehicles on U.S. Route 68 south of Hickory Grove Road closed the highway for more than two hours Tuesday afternoon, leaving an Urbana woman seriously injured.

Megan E. Clary, age 27 of Urbana, had been traveling north-bound behind another vehicle and attempted to pass on the double yellow line in the apex of the curve. Clary’s silver 1999 Honda Accord collided head-on into a south-bound black 2005 GMC Envoy SUV driven by Heath Klepinger, age 41, of Springfield. Both vehicles sustained severe front-end damage.

Clary was transported to Springfield Regional Medical Center and then sent to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton where she was listed in serious condition Tuesday night. Klepinger was treated and released at Springfield Regional. A 2-year-old child riding in the back of Clary’s Honda was treated at the Springfield hospital and released.

Medical helicopters were unable to respond directly to the crash scene when it was reported just after 3 p.m. due to rainy, windy conditions.

The crash occurred in the 3000 block of Route 68. Urbana Fire and EMS, German Township Fire and EMS along with Champaign County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the location.

The accident remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office.
