On March 18, the Urbana FFA chapter will package 50,000 meals with the help of the Meals of Hope Organization. Domestically, this nationwide organization has provided food security to millions. Meals of Hope will supply all resources needed for packaging the food. Once packaged, the food will be distributed to food pantries in Champaign County.
The idea for sponsoring this event was the result of participating in a Meals of Hope Project last summer when four Urbana FFA members attended the Washington Leadership Conference. During the conference, these students were involved in packaging 139,000 individual meals for Meals of Hope.
After the conference, the chapter wanted to help with the food insecurity issues in Champaign County. Chapter officers and members that attended WLC brought the idea back to the chapter and discussed with the Meals of Hope organization to see if we were able host an event. After obtaining more information from the Meals of Hope representatives, the chapter set a goal of raising $12,500 dollars to pay for the meals and packaging. Once we received approval from the school, we began planning the event. To date, we have spent about 60 hours planning and speaking with local business for sponsorship. We proudly can say that sponsorship is under way and have received some donations. The chapter is still accepting donations and sponsorship for this event.
On March 18, 150 volunteers, consisting primarily of Urbana High School FFA members, will meet for two hours to pack 50,000 meals, which consist of macaroni and cheese (fortified with soy protein and 21 vitamins and minerals). If you are interested in sponsoring the event or want more information please contact Steve Wilhelm at 937-508-7320 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
