A Springfield woman died in a two-vehicle crash Monday, according to the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office.

Aerial R. Harris, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by Champaign County Coroner Dr. Joshua Richards.

The sheriff’s office reports that at 9:07 p.m. Monday, deputies and Urbana Fire and EMS responded to the area of East state Route 29 at South Dugan Road in Urbana Township for a two-vehicle injury crash.

Upon their arrival, deputies determined that a 2002 Honda Accord driven by Harris was traveling eastbound when her vehicle went left of center and was struck by a 2005 Chevy Silverado driven by Cody Nichols, 31, of Urbana, who was traveling westbound.

Nichols was transported to Mercy Memorial Hospital before being transferred to Riverside Hospital via MedFlight. He was listed in good condition Tuesday.

The crash remained under investigation by the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office.

Champaign County Sheriff Matt Melvin said Monday’s crash is the second fatal crash the department has responded to this year.

The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single-vehicle crash at state Route 296 and Upper Valley Pike just north of Urbana on June 14. Mechanicsburg resident Mackenzee Hartley, 18, died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

Melvin said Tuesday that the crash remains under investigation.

On May 14, the Urbana Police Division responded to the 300 block of Lewis B. Moore Drive for a single-vehicle crash. Charles Gage IV, 19, of Columbus, died from injuries sustained in the rollover crash.

Urbana Police Chief Matt Lingrell said Tuesday that this crash remains under investigation.

According to the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s website, there was one fatal crash in Champaign County last year, six in 2013 and six in 2012.
