Triad school board hears of online class success

NORTH LEWISBURG – Triad Local Schools’ new online learning options have expanded choices for existing students.

Students looking for credit recovery or for electives not offered in the classroom can get those courses in the new Triad Opportunity School.

Teacher Patrick Johnson told the school board Thursday the district has 37 students enrolled for credit enrichment, elective courses or advanced coursework; 25 students to recover academic credits; and 10 students for a “blended day” or completely online coursework, with either some work in the physical classroom or all work at home online.

Senior Aaron Brennan demonstrated some of what he has learned through computer science and game design to the board, showcasing some games he developed in class.

The board also heard from Superintendent Chris Piper about the first round of test data released for the 2014-15 school report cards. The new data only includes half of what the report cards rate, and Piper said he is not sure the data is accurate. For example, he knows of a few students who graduated with honors diplomas, but the released data show the district had no students with that distinction.

The rest of the report card data is supposed to be released later this month, and possibly in March, Piper added.

In other action, the board:

•Accepted the resignation of elementary Secretary Kathy Packman for retirement, effective July 1, 2016.

•Approved the initial 97-day contract for Physical Education/Intervention Specialist Nicole Hanes at Step 0, beginning Jan. 4, 2016.

•Approved hiring Baseball Head Coach Will Nichols, Softball Head Coach Shari Dixon and Head Boys Track Coach Payton Printz, all at Step 5; JV Assistant Softball Coach Erica Trainer, Head Girls Track Coach Martha Lehman, and 1/3 time Weightlifting Coach Jason Malone, all at Step 0; for the 2015-16 school year.

•Approved hiring JV Baseball Assistant Coach Larry Searles at Step 5 for the 2015-16 school year.

•Approved hiring Substitute Custodian Clyde Myers for the 2015-16 school year.

•Approved the overnight trip for Triad Band to attend band camp at Camp Clifton in Yellow Springs, July 10-14. Students are responsible for the cost of the trip, but school bus transportation is requested.

•Approved a resolution approving a settlement agreement and mutual release of claims with Reiter Dairy LLC, and authorizing the board representative to execute the settlement agreement and mutual release of claims.

•Accepted $1,708.75 in donations from the Triad PTA for the Triad Elementary Principal’s Fund.
