MECHANICSBURG – Village Council on July 20 passed, by a 5-0 vote (council member Lori Tibbals was absent), a resolution to place a 5-year, 0.5-mill replacement levy for the operation and maintenance of Maple Grove Cemetery on the November ballot.
If approved by village residents, the tax dollars would be used to fund the village’s share of expenses at the cemetery, which is jointly operated by the village and Goshen Township. Council noted township residents will vote on a similar levy.
Village Administrator April Huggins-Davis informed council the Street Committee will be meeting at 9 a.m. Saturday in the municipal building to discuss several issues, including the ongoing parking concerns within the village, street repairs and leaf pickup.
In regards to concerns over parked cars reducing visibility when pulling out from several intersections within the village – most notably the East Sandusky Street and Locust Street intersection as well as the North Main Street and East Race Street intersection – Huggins-Davis said one option to be discussed during the meeting will be having 70-foot parking setback distances or clearances from intersections where visibility is an issue.
“The mayor and I went and measured (70 feet) off,” she said. “With a 70-foot setback from the corner, you can see a car coming and you know whether to pull out or not.”
Mayor Greg Kimball added, “Seventy feet was not an arbitrary number. It was taken from the city of Columbus.”
The Street Committee will also be discussing other options including two-hour parking, Huggins-Davis said.
“We are not taking anything lightly, and we are trying to find a solution that is pleasing to everyone,” Council member Jodi Compton said.
In other business, Fire Chief Bob Keene informed council the air conditioning unit in Medic 31, the department’s only operating medic, went out and is currently in the shop being repaired.
“Urbana has been gracious enough to loan us their backup medic,” he said.
