2 retail workers charged with selling alcohol to minor

Ty Inskeep, 41, and Lindsay Piper, 30, were charged with the first degree misdemeanor of selling alcohol to a minor during Sept. 27 compliance checks conducted by the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, Urbana Police Division and the Ohio Investigative Unit. The two retail employees were to appear in municipal court to answer charges.

Information released Monday by the Sheriff’s Office states that eight locations in the county that sell alcohol were checked on Sept. 27. Sheriff’s Office deputies and members of the Investigative Unit conducted the checks at businesses outside the city, and police officers and members of the Investigative Unit conducted checks at sites in Urbana.

Inskeep was charged with selling to a minor at Sycamore Market, 50 N. Sycamore St., in North Lewisburg. Piper was charged with selling to a minor at Marathon Gas, 230 S. Main St., Urbana.

Six of the 8 retailers were found to be in compliance: Winners 1 Stop, 147 W. Sandusky St., Mechanicsburg; 559 Cafe/Spain Creek Tavern, 35 N. Sycamore St., North Lewisburg; BJ’s Drive Thru, 1021 N. Main St., Urbana; Speedway, 731 N. Main St., Urbana; Urbana Valero, 1273 S. U.S. Route 68, Urbana; and Bracken’s Pub, 106 Miami St., Urbana.

In a news release Sheriff Matthew Melvin expresses thanks to area retailers compliant with Ohio laws regarding selling alcohol to minors and states the Sheriff’s Office will continue to work with area law agencies to conduct such compliance checks.
