Gastroenterology specialist joins Mercy Health

SPRINGFIELD – Mercy Health – Springfield announced that gastroenterology specialist Cheng Zhang, MD, has joined Mercy Health Physicians.

Dr. Zhang attended Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University in China before completing his residency and fellowship training in otolaryngology at Beijing Hospital in China.

He went on earn a Ph.D. in molecular biology from the School of Pharmacy at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.

He completed a second residency at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center, which is affiliated with Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, and a fellowship in gastroenterology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, in Boston, Massachusetts.

Zhang was an assistant professor at the Ohio State University, where he led multiple multi-center clinical trials and studies regarding inflammatory bowel disease. He has received numerous awards based on the outcomes of his research in gastrointestinal diseases.

“I’m very pleased to join Mercy Health Physicians and work directly with patients experiencing gastrointestinal issues,” he said. “I look forward to serving the community and helping my patients be well and enjoy good health.”
