Champaign County Retired Teachers are eagerly awaiting the 50-year celebration of fellowship and community service.

The anniversary dinner will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at the Church of the Nazarene on East state Route 29 in Urbana.

Members are reminded to sign up for the event by calling 653-7777 or 465-4446.

Attendees will be the guests of the Champaign County RTA chapter.

Many special recognitions and memories will pervade the hall on that day. The usual agenda also will be observed.

The August meeting was of interest, as members shared their thoughts about education and their memories concerning colleagues, attributes of students and advice for new teachers.

Colleagues who were most helpful were fellow teachers, administrators and staff. Support of these persons was most important. Local names mentioned included the following: Florence Dill, Lois Lahman, Debra Kress, Karen Headlee, Richard Wisma, Marion Johnson, Evelyn Pence, Lynn York, Mike Liskowiak, Betty Smith Peters and Virgil Youtz.

Students who were most inspirational found joy in learning, were excited by the material being presented, had positive responses to the classroom experiences, and a willingness to participate in discussions.

Advice for new teachers was all positive.

Consensus items encompassed the following: “Hang in there,” “Enjoy your job,” “Remember why you wanted to teach,” “Have faith in your work,” “Be the best you can be,” “Plan to nurture and inspire,” Love your students,” and “Get a good night’s sleep!”

Retired Teachers also shared hilarious moments in their careers.
