On Jan. 5, the Urbana City Council approved a $29,000 contract with Burgess & Niple, Columbus for a study on the downtown roundabout to look into whether there’s a need to modify lane configuration, parking and/or pedestrian crossings.

“I think most would agree, maybe not everyone, that the intersection has worked pretty well as a roundabout, but we have seen some issues with it,” Community Development Manager Doug Crabill said during the Jan. 5 council meeting. “ODOT (Ohio Department of Transportation) typically comes around every 10 to 15 years to do resurfacing. To get out ahead of it, we thought we could start working on what we need to do to tweak this intersection before it gets resurfaced again in five to 10 years.”

During Monday’s public forum, Burgess & Niple will present its proposed conceptual changes to the roundabout, and city officials are requesting the community, especially those who own a business or work in the downtown area, to attend the meeting to provide feedback on improvements that may be suggested by the engineering consultants.
