Park District offers varied activities for all ages

SPRINGFIELD – The Clark County Park District offers a variety of programs. Register for programs by calling the Park District office at 937-882-6000 or online at www.clarkcountyparks.org under Program Registration.

Hertzler House Tour, Every Sunday 1-3 p.m.

Hertzler House Museum in George Rogers Clark Park

Donation: $8 for adults, Students (K- grade 8) $1; Grade 9- College $3

Tour the historic Hertzler House to learn about the family that lived there, the things they used to make clothing and the foods they ate. This tour is only available during the summer months. Otherwise, please call for a private tour.

Clark Park Hikers, Every Thursday, 9 a.m.

George Rogers Clark Park

Join Park District Volunteers each Thursday morning to enjoy a walk through the woods at George Rogers Clark Park. This group has been exploring the park weekly for over 10 years, yet each week brings a new discovery! Meet at the parking lot below the dam and experience the beauty and camaraderie found in the outdoors.

Nature in Reading, Migrating Monarchs (and other butterflies), 1-2 p.m. Wednesday, July 5

Smith Park, 801 W Jefferson St, New Carlisle, Ohio 45344

The Monarch Butterfly is one amazing insect, migrating thousands of miles each year. Learn about these and other butterflies that live around you. See some preserved specimens up close so you can find them on your own. Each family will receive a “Butterflies and Skippers of Ohio” guide to use at home.

Wetland Warriors Summer Series, Investigation: The Gorge, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday, July 18

Mad River Gorge & Nature Preserve, Dayton-Springfield Road

Come explore our new park to uncover what lives there. There are natural cliffs, the Mad River, a meadow and many other things to find at the Mad River Gorge. Bring your lunch and plenty of cold water to drink. Please dress for the weather and wear closed toe shoes.

Night Fishing, 8 p.m.-midnight Friday, July 21

Hosterman Lake, George Rogers Clark Park

Join the Ranger Patrol Division for a fun, family night of fishing. Listen to the sounds of the night, visit with family and friends and catch some fish. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to fish Hosterman Lake at night! Bring your own fishing pole, bait, tackle, insect repellant and lantern or flashlight. Pack some snacks and have a night picnic. (Remember: No alcoholic beverages are allowed.) Please place all trash in the trash cans before you leave that night. Homeschool Summer Series, Butterfly Hike, 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 26

Spangler Nature Preserve, Leadingham Prairie Entrance

Join us as we search for the 40 + species of butterflies that live in our prairie each year. We will also discover the vibrant plants they pollinate throughout the summer.

Discovering Butterflies, 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 29

Leadingham Prairie, corner of Union and Spangler Roads, Medway

Search for Ohio’s winged wonders, the butterflies, from the Pearl Crescent to the Monarch. Bring binoculars if you have them! Please wear long pants, old shoes and a hat. Bring a long-sleeved shirt and water. It does get wet in the prairie, so waders are recommended.
