The cause of a structure fire that displaced residents Thursday evening remains under investigation.

The Urbana Fire Division was dispatched to 1032 Bon Air Drive at 10:50 p.m. Thursday on a possible structure fire.

Urbana Fire Chief Mark Keller said fire personnel observed heavy fire and smoke at the rear of the residence upon their arrival. Keller said the fire started in the back of the residence, but that the exact location had not been determined.

He said the fire caused severe damage to the house, particularly to the roof.

“The roof’s basically gone off the house right now,” Keller said.

No damage estimate was available as of Friday afternoon.

No injuries were reported.

Keller said one person was at the residence at the time of the fire and the displaced residents are being assisted by the Red Cross.

According to the Champaign County Auditor’s website, the house is owned by Marjorie Moffitt.

Keller said Urbana Fire personnel remained at the residence until around 4 a.m. and people were also on the scene throughout Friday.

Mutual aid was provided by JSP, the West Liberty Fire Department, Mechanicsburg EMS and Box 13.
