Champaign County Retired Teachers Association members laud their teachers

The most recent meeting of the Champaign County Retired Teachers Association was devoted to the teachers’ most inspirational teachers. As a part of the year-long 50th anniversary celebrations, teachers told stories about educators who were important in their lives.

Most mentioned were teachers who were kind, conscious of the individual students, and who made the studies interesting. The age of the teacher, the subject, or the institution (whether kindergarten or college) made no difference in these qualities. The persons mentioned also proved, in many cases, to be the motivation for members to become educators.

Several also stated that those teachers had high expectations for the students in the classes, but adjusted to each person’s needs. Humor was also held in high regard.

The CCRTA members come from many areas, so some of the names were not known to others. However, inspirational teachers who were named from Champaign County included (in no particular order): “Woody” Miller, Dorothy Duer, Doug Megginson, Jack Wood, Janet Ebert, Joe West, Burr Simpson, Arlene Smith, Grace Stickley, Lena Yoder, Alice Ford, Francis Keatley, Virginia Stanley, Mildred Palmer, and Agatha Putnam.

The next meeting of the CCRTA will be at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, June 13 at the Church of the Nazarene on East Route 29, The group will celebrate those who have won the CCRTA Scholarship since its inception. The current recipient will be introduced. The members are still seeking addresses for Brittany Davis (2007), Sara Burkhamm (2007) and Emily Alderfer (2006).
