UPDATED: Car flies off 68 overpass, lands near bike path

URBANA TWP. – A car that careened off the U.S. Route 68 overpass near West County Line Road and West Dallas Road landed in an area near railroad tracks and the bike path – resting there on its top for nearly 10 hours before being discovered Sunday morning.

At 8:38 a.m. Sunday, Champaign County 911 dispatch received a call about a single-vehicle accident at the highway overpass that stretches across the bike path. Urbana Fire and EMS and Champaign County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the call and found a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by 28-year-old Nicholas Halaoui of St. Paris, had been traveling southbound in the median of Route 68 when it went off the overpass and crashed to the railroad tracks below. The railroad tracks run closely parallel to the bike path.

The investigation shows the crash occurred between 11 and 11:30 p.m. Saturday. Halaoui was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to the sheriff’s office.

Halaoui was transported by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital on Sunday morning.
