Urbana University’s 126th Commencement Ceremony is to take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 6, in the Warren G. Grimes Center. Nearly 200 students are expected to walk across the stage and receive their diplomas.
The commencement speaker will be Eric L. Burkland, president of the Ohio Manufacturers’ Association since 1989. Previously, he held positions of Vice President, Legislative Relations, Community Mutual Insurance Company, Director of the Department of State Legislation, was with the Ohio State Medical Association and was a staff writer for the Wheeling News-Register. He is a 1974 honors graduate of Miami University, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science.
The student speaker will be Jenna Hooks of Sidney. She attended Houston High School and is a double major, earning her Bachelor of Science in Adolescent and Young Adult Education and her Bachelor of Arts in English. She was a member of the presidential scholars program and completed the William G. Edwards honors program, while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.
While at Urbana, she competed as a member of the cross country team and currently holds the school record for the fastest 5K and 6K. She was president of Sigma Tau Delta English honor society, the vice president of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee, a member of the Student Education Association, and she served on the board of the Knights 4 Christ organization.
Hooks has accepted a position for the 2017-2018 school year at Wapakoneta High School, teaching 9th and 11th grade college-prep English.
During the ceremony, Dr. W. Dean Pond, Dean of the College of Arts, Sciences and Education, will confer the degrees and Dr. Christopher Washington, Executive Vice President and Provost, will join Dr. Pond to award diplomas.
