Groundbreaking ceremony set for school

Community members can get a first look at the new pre-kindergarten to eighth grade school building at a “groundbreaking” Sunday.

Urbana City Schools’ board is hosting the event, which will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 30, in the Urbana High School gym. The board had planned to hold it at the site of the new school on South U.S. Route 68, but predicted rainy weather and site preparation delays from wet weather forced a change of venue.

The district is building the 180,000-square-foot school as part of its new-buildings project. The school will house approximately 1,500 students and is estimated to cost $39.5 million. Students are expected to begin using the facility in January 2019, Superintendent Charles Thiel said.

At the event, fourth grade students will perform sign language during the national anthem, and the elementary show choir will perform. Board President Jan Engle and District One Representative Linda Haycock from the Ohio Board of Education will speak. City of Urbana Director of Administration Kerry Brugger will represent the city, as Mayor Bill Bean will be out of the area.

The event will feature the floor plans for the new school building, Thiel said.
