The Champaign Family YMCA is opening the doors at the First Presbyterian Church in Urbana for a new half-day preschool program for children ages 3-5. The program will run from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday.

The public is invited to an open house 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 28. The church is located at 116 W. Court St. The preschool program is scheduled to begin on Monday, Feb. 1.

The Y’s preschool program is led by Linda Coffman, an educator with over 36 years of experience in the Urbana City Schools who’s also led Y preschool programs for the past six years.

“I am really excited about this new adventure,” stated Coffman. “Preschool is such an important part in a young child’s life. Each of our children is a unique little being who needs love, nurturing and understanding. We give them all the same chances to do and try things and they respond in their own way.”

YMCA preschool teachers provide a positive foundation for each child’s social, emotional and cognitive development in a Christian environment. Other preschool goals include providing a place where children can learn about their uniqueness and develop new relationships and learn about their expanding world. Each child is free to explore, experiment and make decisions. The children will also be involved in school readiness activities for greater success in kindergarten.
