Triad board approves window replacement bids

NORTH LEWISBURG – Two Triad Local Schools buildings will be getting new windows this summer, the school board decided Thursday.

The board unanimously approved bids to replace windows at Triad Elementary and Triad Middle School. The board awarded the elementary school window bid to Capitol Aluminum Glass of Columbus for an estimated total of $179,500, and a bid for the middle school windows to Hemm Glass of Sidney, Piqua and Troy for a total of $216,495. The work is expected to be done this summer, Superintendent Chris Piper said.

There were three bids for the work, Piper said.

The bids include replacing the frames of the windows at the elementary and putting in blinds. The amounts of the bids were about $115,000 below the architect’s estimated cost for the work, Treasurer Connie Cohn said.

The window replacement is part of a larger maintenance plan the district has been working on to address infrastructure needs over the next several years.

The school board also learned about a survey tracking developmental assets of Triad students in the sixth, eighth and 10th grades. Piper said the survey is taken by students in those grades every two years, and the data is compiled by the Family and Children First Council and the Drug Free Youth Coalition. The data illustrate what students think about their external environment and internal skills, or what it takes to help students succeed. Piper said the information helps the district improve in areas students think they need more instruction. He added it also helps the district work with community members to provide a better living and learning environment outside school.

District officials meet with various members of the community, such as church leaders and village officials, to determine how to help students succeed. Data from the report indicated students feel they are highly motivated at school and have positive peer influences, but that there are not enough positive role models in the community.

Piper said he hopes to meet with various youth groups and leaders in the community to see if they can address some of these needs.

Other school districts in Champaign County also take part in the survey, Piper said. Graham Local Schools does not participate, he said.

In other action, the board:

•Approved hiring Deborah Baker as an after-school tutor for the 2016-17 school year.

•Approved a memorandum of understanding between the school district and the Triad Education Association to post the Director of Plays Assistant position.

•Approved hiring Director of Plays Assistant Todd Bodey at Step 0 for the 2016-17 school year.
