A Bellefontaine woman was seriously injured after crashing her car during snowy white-out conditions north of Urbana on Thursday afternoon.

Sarah E. McDaniel, age 50, was taken to Mercy Memorial Hospital in Urbana and then transported to Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton. McDaniel was listed in critical condition as of 12:13 p.m. on Friday. No other persons were in the car at the time of the crash.

On Thursday at approximately 3:15 p.m., Champaign Countywide Communication Center received a 911 call in reference to the single vehicle accident with injury occurring in the area of 2624 North U.S. Route 68. Urbana Fire & EMS responded along with Champaign County Sheriff’s deputies to the location.

At the scene, a gray 2005 Honda Civic had been traveling south-bound on North U.S. Highway 68. A witness who was also traveling south-bound behind the victim advised that they had driven into white-out conditions from the snow. The witness advised that the victim’s vehicle went off the right side of the roadway and came back onto the pavement and then lost control again, going off the right side of the roadway, sliding sideways striking a DP&L power pole on the driver’s side of the car. On scene, Urbana Fire & EMS had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate McDaniel from the car.

At this time, the crash is under investigation by the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office.
