Two projects aimed at improving infrastructure on the city’s east side will be before Urbana City Council during its meeting at 6 p.m. today in municipal court chambers.
To move forward with the construction phase of the U.S. 36 East Improvements Project, expected to begin later this year, the administration will seek council’s approval to enter into a construction contract with J&J Schlaegel Inc. in the amount of $1,338,250.98.
The project, which is being funded through state grants, city funding and Urbana Township funding, is designed to improve the section of East U.S. Route 36 from Berwick Drive to Lippincott Lane by installing curbs and gutters, sidewalks, street lights and storm sewer infrastructure.
As work on the U.S. 36 East Improvements Project nears completion later this summer or early fall, the city is expected to move right into the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) Urban Resurfacing Project.
To move forward with this project, which will resurface East U.S. Route 36 from Berwick Drive to just east of Dugan Road as well as resurface state Route 29 from Bon Air Drive to just east of Eastview Drive, council will be presented with a resolution authorizing ODOT to complete the work and the city’s director of finance to appropriate $123,806 toward the project.
In other business:
•An ordinance seeking to amend the city’s official zoning map by rezoning eight parcels in the area of North Main Street/Fyffe Street from a combination of R-2 Medium Density Residential and M-1 Manufacturing to all M-1 designations will undergo a second reading.
The rezoning request, which was brought about by city staff after discovering the parcels were incorrectly labeled as R-2 zoning districts on the official zoning map, involves properties owned by Ultra-met and 720 North Main LLC (Ultra-met corporate location).
A public hearing addressing the rezoning request will be the first matter of business conducted during today’s meeting.
•Urbana Police Division Officer Jason Kizer will be sworn in to his new role as a sergeant for the UPD.
•Administration and the city’s Health Insurance Committee will recommend council authorize the purchase of Medical Mutual group health insurance as well as life, vision and dental insurances at a cost of $1,312,162.
•Council will be asked to increase a previous purchase order to Cherokee Run Landfill by $4,346.44 for sludge hauling.
