The driver charged in the crash that killed long-time Urbana City Schools board member Warren Stevens in September 2016 made an initial appearance in Champaign County Municipal Court on Friday.

Kristen L. Reed received a personal recognizance bond, and a motion to continue the arraignment hearing was accepted so she could seek legal counsel.

Reed, 44, is charged with vehicular homicide, a first degree misdemeanor, vehicular manslaughter, a second degree misdemeanor, and a minor misdemeanor failure to yield the right of way at a stop sign stemming from the Sept. 28, 2016, crash.

On that date, Champaign County deputies were dispatched to the intersection of North Ludlow Road and East Kanagy Road.

A 1998 Ford Expedition driven by Reed was traveling westbound on East Kanagy Road when she allegedly failed to yield the right of way at a stop sign, causing the vehicle to collide with a 2014 Honda Accord driven by Stevens. Stevens was traveling northbound on North Ludlow Road.

Stevens’ vehicle spun and was hit in the rear by a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 heavy duty truck traveling southbound on North Ludlow Road.

Stevens was pronounced dead at the scene.

During Friday’s hearing, Municipal Court Prosecutor Breanne Parcels noted members of Stevens’ family were in the courtroom.

Judge Gil S. Weithman informed Reed the vehicular homicide charge carries a potential 180-day jail penalty and a loss of license and the vehicular manslaughter charge carries a potential 90-day jail penalty.

The arraignment hearing is scheduled to continue on Feb. 22.
