On December 12, 1988, Christoper Lee Fay was murdered. He was my brother-in-law’s brother. Chris drove a taxi. As he drove Dwight Jeffrey Loving toward his destination, Chris told him that he was going home to Michigan the next day to see his wife and 9 month old son. When they arrived at Loving’s destination, he robbed Chris of $30 and then shot him twice in the back of his head.
On the third to last day of his presidency, Barack Obama commuted Loving’s sentence from death to a life sentence. My brother-in-law (Greg) researched the recently commuted cases and they were mostly drug cases, no other murder cases. The Army JAG at the Pentagon had no answer for Greg as to why Obama did this. Chris’ son Ryan, who was 9 months old at the time of his father’s murder, was angry and asked his Uncle Greg why Obama did this and he could give him no answer.
This was a sucker punch to the gut of the entire Fay family, as if they haven’t been through enough heartache. I hurt for all of them, especially Chris and Greg’s mother Kathleen, and of course Ryan, who never knew his father. It’s no secret to those who know me, that I have rarely agreed with the policies nor understood the logic of the 44th president and do you know what? This just sealed it for me.
