Triad board approves MOUs

NORTH LEWISBURG – Triad Local Schools on Thursday approved two memorandums to use value-added data as part of evaluations.

The two memorandums of understanding (MOU), one between the school board and the Triad Education Association and the other between the school board and the principals, allow for the use of value-added scores in teacher and principal evaluations, Superintendent Chris Piper said.

The scores would normally be part of those evaluations, but the state put that measure on hold while it sorts out its changes in testing, not wanting the scores to have an impact on hiring decisions. The district had to approve MOUs last year for this same reason.

Piper said once the tests are set and established, the district will not need to have these memorandums passed.

The school board also learned more about the Triad Opportunity School, the district’s online program allowing students to make up credits, take more advanced courses and take elective courses. The program helps keep students who want another option for schooling in the district, instead of losing those students to other programs.

In other action, the board:

•Accepted the resignation of custodian Gary Rees, effective Jan. 9, 2017.

•Approved hiring Track and Field Assistant Coach Tom Borawski at Step 0 for the 2016-17 school year.

•Accepted the donation of a digital camera, estimated value $500, from Jostens for the Triad High School Yearbook; and a donation of $200 from the Veterans of Foreign War Men’s Auxiliary Post 5451 of Urbana for a one-time scholarship for a student entering the military or who comes from a military family.

Hears more of growing online schooling options
