A capias warrant was issued this week against a man charged for a physical altercation with law enforcement.

The warrant to apprehend Anthony C. Hammond was issued on Tuesday during an arraignment hearing. According to court documents, Hammond was not present for the hearing.

Tuesday’s hearing was a continuation of a Dec. 30, 2016, arraignment hearing for which Hammond failed to appear. He attended an initial arraignment hearing held on Dec. 20, 2016, where no plea was entered.

Hammond, 56, is charged with two counts of assault and one count each of obstructing official business and resisting arrest, stemming from a Nov. 9, 2016, incident.

On that date, Hammond entered the Champaign County Municipal Court at the end of another hearing, causing a disturbance over an unrelated matter.

Hammond was ordered from the court and was told he was in contempt of court. As an Urbana police officer and the court bailiff attempted to arrest Hammond, he continued to struggle causing the altercation to end up in the lobby of the municipal building.

Additional officers and a municipal court probation officer assisted in getting Hammond into custody.
