Adriel students arrested following fight with staff

WEST LIBERTY – Multiple teens were charged and arrested Wednesday after law enforcement responded to a fight involving Adriel students and staff.

According to information from West Liberty Police Chief Shane Oelker, officers from the West Liberty Police Department were dispatched to the Adriel campus, 414 N. Detroit St., at 6:30 p.m. on a report of a large fight involving at least 10 students and staff.

Upon arrival, officers determined juveniles had been fighting with each other as well as with three staff members working at the time of the incident. Officers also determined there was significant property damage caused by the juveniles.

Officers arrested eight juveniles for criminal mischief and persistent disorderly conduct.

While officers were investigating the initial incident, they learned of another juvenile who was involved in an altercation at another group home on the campus. Upon the arrival of an officer at that incident it was found that the juvenile destroying the living quarters of the group home. The female juvenile was placed under arrest.

The two West Liberty Police officers dispatched to the scene were assisted by three Logan County deputies during Wednesday’s incident.

Oelker noted the incident followed a weekend during which officers arrested six juveniles from Adriel for various offenses as well as an incident in which two juveniles stole a staff member’s personal vehicle. The juveniles who stole the vehicle are still at large.

He added this incident as well as the incidents from the weekend remain under investigation and further charges are pending against the juveniles and two other possible suspects.
