County Extension offers intro to beekeeping class

0

Beekeeping has become more popular among homeowners and farmers in recent years. Local honey is a popular product at farmers markets and can be sold for a reasonable profit. Others get into beekeeping to help promote the health and abundance of the species as honeybee populations have struggled the last few years due to a number of different environmental factors.

Starting a beehive can be daunting to those who have not done so before. What equipment do you need? Do I have the right food sources? What is the life cycle of a bee? These are all important questions that need to be answered before a successful hive can be established.

On Thursday, Jan. 19, Amanda Bennett, Ag Extension Educator in Miami County and an experienced beekeeper, will spend a couple hours covering the basics of beekeeping and answering the questions necessary for successful hive management. The program will run from 6:30-8:30pm in the Auditorium of the Champaign County Community Center. The cost is $5 which includes handouts and refreshments.

A registration form can be found at http://go.osu.edu/agevents. Register by mailing in the form or bringing it to the Champaign County Extension Office, 1512 South US Hwy 68, Suite B100, Urbana. Registration can be taken over the phone with a credit card by calling 937-484-1526.
