Former bank employees plead guilty to felony theft

Two former Security National Bank employees charged with stealing thousands of dollars from the bank pleaded guilty Monday.

Co-defendants Kristen S. Head and Kristie K. Shover pleaded guilty to aggravated theft, a third degree felony, during separate final pretrial conferences.

The co-defendants were charged with stealing money from Security National Bank, 828 Scioto St.

Urbana Police Chief Matt Lingrell previously stated an investigation commenced in July into a long-term internal theft case involving the co-defendants, who had been employed at the bank. The investigation determined that $391,000 was stolen from the bank dating back to 2009 when Shover was a teller and Head was the head teller.

Lingrell stated Shover, 46, was terminated as the bank’s head teller in July. She had been employed with the bank since 2004. Head, 34, had been employed from 2001 until she resigned in 2014 as the bank’s office manager.

The aggravated theft charge carries a maximum three-year prison sentence and $10,000 fine. As part of Monday’s plea resolution, third degree felony charges of receiving stolen property and tampering with records were dismissed.

Another significant component of the plea resolution is both co-defendants agreed to pay restitution to the bank in the amount of $310,000. Before agreeing to the resolution, Judge Nick Selvaggio asked the co-defendants about their financial ability to pay back such a large amount of restitution.

Selvaggio noted the two co-defendants will be obligated to pay restitution jointly, but informed both that if one co-defendant fails to meet this obligation the other can pursue legal action against her. He also stated if the court finds out a co-defendant willfully refuses to pay restitution the court can take action such as revoking any community control sentence it could impose.

A sentencing hearing for Head is scheduled for Feb. 6, 2017, while a sentencing hearing for Shover is scheduled for Jan. 30, 2017.
