NORTH LEWISBURG – Triad Local Schools’ board heard on Thursday about the club helping a deaf Triad student communicate with his peers.

The American Sign Language Club, started by Sign Language Interpreter Makenzie Miller, helps students and teachers communicate with Triad Elementary first grader Carson Jackson. The club was profiled in a Dec. 10 Daily Citizen article.

The club is popular with students of all grade levels at the elementary, who are enjoying learning the language and being able to communicate with one of their peers, Miller said. The group has helped Carson feel a part of the community, something he had struggled with previously.

Also at Thursday’s meeting, the board learned that a process of refinancing the district’s building project debt is estimated to save $105,000, Treasurer Connie Cohn said.

During the meeting, the board:

•Approved substitute bus aide Lori Bowshier for the 2016-17 school year.

•Approved senior Dominick Miller for early graduation.

•Accepted a $100 donation from Cable United Methodist Church for nurse supplies.
