Aviation program to be highlighted during open house

In an attempt to increase interest in aviation careers among area high school students, an open house highlighting Ohio Hi-Point Career Center’s Aviation Occupations Satellite program will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 12, inside the Gecowets Hangar at Grimes Field in Urbana.

Airport Manager Lou Driever said he suggested the open house during a recent Ohio Hi-Point Career Center Oversight Committee meeting, and the idea was well-received.

“The event is open to all,” he said. “We want to share information about available educational options with everyone.”

The open house will primarily focus on the aviation satellite program, which currently meets on school days from noon to 2 p.m. at Grimes Field.

“This program provides an excellent opportunity to prepare for rewarding careers in aviation,” Driever said. “High school students in public or private schools, as well as home schoolers, are welcome in this program.”

During the open house, Frank Drain, aviation occupations instructor at Ohio Hi-Point Career Center, will discuss the program and lead a tour through the classroom, which is located inside the Gecowets Hangar.

“I’ll also talk briefly about the local Civil Air Patrol program that offers further education opportunities for cadets, and both Sinclair College and Bowling Green State University will be making presentations on their aviation programs,” Driever said. “This combination offers the chance to see how the aviation curriculum develops from high school through college-level courses.”

Driever added light refreshments will be available, and following the open house, he will provide a tour of the Champaign Aviation Museum.
